Deer Hunter 2005 Hunting Tips

Shooting
  • Shooting from a prone position will make your shots more accurate.
  • Closer shots are more powerful, and have a better chance of dropping your target with a single shot. A high stealth rating will allow you to get closer to the deer.
  • Try to shoot deer in the lungs for a one shot kill.
  • Your weapons skill affects many facets of shooting, including reload time, accuracy, weapon shake, and recovery time.
  • Always test out your custom made weapons in the target range to see how they work.
Tracking
  • Always try to track prey that might have been hit.
  • Watch your prey carefully as it runs away, to make tracking easier.
  • A very high tracking skill will help you to easily locate the trail.
Calling
  • Attractants are an effective way to bring in deer.
  • A good calling skill will make your calling much more effective, and will decrease the chance of a blown call.
  • Hunters with a low calling should rely on antlers, food, scents, and electric calls. While these are less effective than a deer call in the hands of a hunter with a high calling skill, the hunter has no chance of "blowing" the call.
  • Calls and scents work best in pre-rut and rut. Food works best in post-rut. Deer groups have a very different makeup depending on the season. Use wildlife mode to see the makeup of these groups, and use this to your advantage during the hunts.

Scouting Mode:
  • Use scouting mode to see where deer like to feed, drink, and bed down.
  • Concealments placed in scouting mode (blinds, stands, etc.) are more effective than concealments set up on-the-fly during a hunt.
Hunter Rating
  • Play at higher difficulty levels (Normal, Expert) to increase your hunter rating.
  • Weapons which are more difficult to use, such as bows, crossbows, shotguns, pistols, and muzzleloaders improve your hunter rating. Bows are best of all.
  • Not using rifle scopes or exotic equipment can improve your hunter rating.
  • Only bucks count toward your hunter rating.
  • Your hunter rating is a combination of your last forty bucks along with your best ten ever. Try to get ten "Record Book" or "World Record" class deers for a big boost.
  • As your presence skill increases, your hunter will identify the score of deer much more accurately with the spotting scope.
Prizes
  • There are several trophies available for the skilled hunter. Hunters who play at higher skill levels, and vary their weapons and prey, will gain these trophies more easily.
Remembering your Hunts
  • Don't forget to use F5 to record your hunts, and play them back in the movie area.
  • Use F10 to take screenshots, which by default can be located after leaving the game in the C:\Program Files\Atari\Deer Hunter 2005\Game\Screenshots\ directory. (Location may differ if you installed it elsewhere, of course.)
